What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are nationally-recognised training programmes combining real work with learning and training. They have become increasingly popular over the years as they allow candidates to earn while they work, whilst also providing a more practical and hands-on approach to learning which is often preferred. An apprenticeship is available to anyone from the age of 16, subject to minimum entry requirements, and is often available at both level 2 (equivalent to five or six GCSEs, grade A* to C) and 3 (equivalent to 3 A-levels). SMARTT Apprenticeships are also available for anyone currently employed so that they can achieve a qualification relating to their work which demonstrates their competence.
Apprenticeships are available in more than 190 roles across a wide variety of industry sectors. These range from accountancy and business administration to plant, construction, engineering, manufacturing – and many more. You can contact us to find your ideal apprenticeship.

The remaining part of the apprenticeship is being aware of, and having an understanding of employment rights and responsibilities. Whilst these individual parts may be assessed separately, only when all parts are successfully achieved will an apprentice receive an apprenticeship certificate.

If I am not in employment but I start an apprenticeship, do I get paid?
From the 1st October 2011 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for apprentices was increased for young people aged 16-18 and those aged over 19 in the first year of their apprenticeship. The new rate is £2.68 per hour. The new NMW applies to the time working plus time spent training as this is also part of the apprenticeship. Anyone not covered by the age category above will be entitled to the NMW appropriate to their age.
